At Ultimate Resilience we’ve been running resilience training workshops for over 10 years with amazing results. So imagine our surprise when we discovered that a blended e-learning approach with online group coaching actually provided many additional benefits. Here we share insight into how e-learning plus coaching drive lasting resilience in a way that traditional in-person training often can't.
How E-learning PLUS coaching drive lasting resilience
When it comes to fostering lasting resilience, most people still tend to turn to the traditional in-person workshop to deliver the outcomes they want. Certainly before the pandemic we might all have agreed that in-person training was more impactful than e-learning.
However, whilst we have seen enormous and lasting benefits from our in-person training, the additional benefits that come with a blended approach have made us rethink our approach. And now we believe that combining e-learning with online group coaching has the edge over traditional in-person workshops.
And here’s why:
Self-paced learning
A blended approach uniquely offers flexibility allowing participants to engage with the e-learning at their own pace and to dip into coaching sessions when they need help. This is a more efficient use of their time and of the company's time.
Repeated exposure to learning materials
Research shows that people retain information better when they engage with it repeatedly over time rather than in a single session. E-learning courses, paired with ongoing group coaching, allow learners to revisit concepts, apply them, and get feedback, which solidifies learning and promotes long-term retention.
Sustained learning over time
Combining e-learning with coaching, provides regular touchpoints allowing learners to test out techniques learned and reflect on their use in real-life scenarios. By reviewing progress, managing setbacks and troubleshooting challenges learners become more skilled and confident using the resilience techniques learned.
Accessible
The fixed schedule needed for in-person training can pose problems with accessibility, particularly with a disparate or hybrid workforce. E-learning allows participants to learn at their own pace, at time and place that works for them. And it reduces the time-inefficient and sometimes costly downsides of bringing a group of employees together for training.
Tailored to Different Learning Styles
E-learning involves a range of formats. Videos, quizzes, reflective exercises, and more, allow it to cater for a range of learning preferences. Combined with the group coaching sessions, this multimodal approach makes it easier for individuals to engage with the material in ways that resonate with them.
Personalised guidance and feedback
Group coaching sessions add an element of personalised support that a one-day workshop typically can’t offer. In a coaching session, learners can ask questions specific to their experiences and get tailored advice on using the skills to handle real-world challenges.
In this way, resilience skills are built incrementally, growing and adapting through feedback and the subsequent successful navigation of challenges.
Community and Peer Learning
In a blended approach, participants build a learning community which provides support, shared perspectives and accountability, all of which are crucial for lasting behavioural change.
Accountability
A one-day workshop might feel energising, but without follow-up, it’s easy for motivation to fade. The blended method of e-learning plus coaching builds accountability into the process, as learners share progress, set goals, and receive encouragement from both coach and peers.
Progress Tracking
E-learning platforms offer analytics on user engagement, progress and completion. These insights help course facilitators identify where learners may need additional support, which can then be addressed in coaching sessions. This adaptability isn’t possible with a one-day workshop, where instructors may have limited opportunity for follow-up.
Measurable Impact
With continuous engagement through e-learning plus coaching, shifts in resilience-related metrics can be monitored. This allows both facilitators and participants to see tangible progress, enhancing motivation and confidence to complete the course.
Convenience for Learners
E-learning is accessible to learners anytime and anywhere, making it easier for busy professionals to fit it into their schedules. The asynchronous nature of the course material, coupled with the option for live coaching sessions, offers flexibility that a one-day workshop cannot match.
Cost-Effective and Scalable
From an organisational perspective, e-learning with online coaching is often more cost-effective and scalable than in-person workshops. It minimizes travel and accommodation costs, maximizes resource use, and allows organisations to reach more employees, especially those in different locations.
Whilst there are many benefits of in-person training, the benefits of a blended approach to resilience training highlights the need to move beyond the in-person workshop to more accessible and scaleable solutions.
