The Guardian: Felicity talking about confidence at work

"Everyone feels like a shrinking violet now and then, but it needn’t hold you back."


Fear of rejection and humiliation is something many of us have experienced, from time to time, particularly when we encounter new or challenging situations. 


But when this is happening more frequently it can become a problem, undermining our confidence at work and leading to a vicious cycle of avoidance, that can keep us stuck.


This common problem is experienced by many people. But in my experience, too few have ever had the training and support they need to build confidence and overcome their fears.


So I was delighted to be invited to comment on this topic in an article in The Guardian this weekend, written by journalist Anita Chaudhuri.


As social beings the need to be liked, included, valued and appreciated is central to our feelings of belonging and key to our resilience and wellbeing. 


But when you lack confidence, experience fears about standing up for yourself or getting things wrong, it can be very disabling, leading to patterns of coping that keep anxiety going.
