NIHR Trauma Management MedTech Co-operative (MICs)
Nursing staff are a professional group facing multiple challenges in their roles, including high levels of pressure and emotional demands. These along with frequent exposure to trauma and loss can undermine resilience and wellbeing.
Having identified this need in nursing staff we developed an online training package aimed at offering strategies to improve resilience and wellbeing in an accessible format. Our future plan is to create an App to support the wellbeing and resilience of clinical staff working within the NHS. An advantage of delivering support via online methods is that training can be made available to large numbers of staff across multiple organisations.
In order to assess the feasibility of providing resilience training for nursing staff using electronic technology we joined forces with the Birmingham NIHR Trauma MIC. This is an organisation who bring together patients clinicians, researchers, commissioners and industry in the development of new medical technologies.
Our research, supported by funding from the European Union, will evaluate the usability of the sample resilience course as an online training programme with a view to informing further App development. As such, the study tests the impact on self-awareness of stress symptoms, on knowledge about resilience and resilience skills, and on motivation to make positive behaviour change. The study results will be available later in the year.
